Special Issue of the Journal of Engineering, Project, and Production Management (EPPM-Journal)
Title: Agentic AI-Driven Decision Making in Complex Engineering and Project Environments
Guest Editors: Dr. Sunil Prajapat and Dr. Yi SUN
Focus, Scope, and Rationale
Modern engineering, project, and production environments are increasingly characterized by complexity, uncertainty, and rapid technological change. Traditional decision-making frameworks often struggle to cope with the high dimensionality of data, nonlinear dependencies among project variables, and the need for real-time adaptive responses. Recent advances in Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) autonomous, self-directed AI systems capable of reasoning, planning, collaboration, and dynamic adaptation offer a transformative pathway to address these challenges. Agentic AI goes beyond automation or predictive analytics; it integrates cognitive capabilities such as situational awareness, goal decomposition, multi-agent collaboration, and interpretability, enabling intelligent systems to act as decision partners rather than static tools.
In engineering and production systems, Agentic AI can autonomously monitor operations, optimize resource allocation, mitigate risks, support project scheduling, and enhance productivity through continuous learning. In project management domains, these intelligent agents can evaluate trade-offs, negotiate constraints, reduce uncertainties, and support stakeholders through scenario-based reasoning. As industries progress toward Industry 5.0 and human-centric automation, Agentic AI creates a bridge between data-driven intelligence and practical decision-support mechanisms tailored for complex socio-technical systems.
Given EPPM-Journal’s mission to advance cross-disciplinary knowledge across engineering, project, and production management, this Special Issue is timely and highly aligned with the journal’s aim to inspire new thinking by combining diverse approaches. By focusing on Agentic AI’s role in decision-making processes across interconnected industrial environments, the SI intends to provide a unique platform for researchers and practitioners to explore theoretical foundations, applications, and case studies that redefine how intelligent agents transform engineering and project ecosystems. This Special Issue will also complement the journal’s earlier themes on AI-enhanced manufacturing, digital twins, and sustainable development while introducing a forward-looking perspective on autonomy-driven decision-making for complex industrial systems.
